Frequently Asked Questions

When did you begin writing?
When I broke my leg. It's true! My first art activity book was written after I fractured my femur and wasn't able to continue teaching art. My children urged me to write a book of easy art activities using a few readily available supplies. "The Little Hands Art Book" was published by Williamson Books and is still in print after all these years!

What inspired you to begin writing art books for children?
As a child I loved the smell of a new box of crayons. I couldn't wait to pick one up and see my imagination come to life on a sheet of paper. In college I majored in art education in order to teach children the joy of expressing their creativity and appreciating the arts. And it's through my books that I get to share my art and craft ideas with so many children and adults.

What is the best part about your job?
Seeing a frayed and well-worn copy of one of my art books on the library shelf. It tells me that a child used my ideas as inspiration to create their very own work of art!

How do you come up with your art activities?
I look around and see things that inspire me. Is it a flower blooming in my garden? Perhaps I can create a flower craft using markers, pipe cleaners and a paper coffee filter? Or if it's a holiday celebration such as the Chinese New Year. I can use a brown paper bag, scissors and markers to create a dragon for the holiday parade. And in my books, the "More Art Fun" section contains ideas to enhance the learning process and increase the interactive experience of each craft.
